The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Mar. 17 that they will host Mental Health Awareness Night, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, during their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 18 at Lenovo Center Arena. The event is part of the National Hockey League’s Hockey Talks initiative, which aims to encourage conversations about mental well-being and reduce stigma around mental health.
The focus on mental health comes as community organizations and sports teams seek to provide more support for individuals facing challenges. Fans attending the game can participate by completing Hockey Talks signs with positive affirmations and words of encouragement, which will be shared with players in the fan tunnel and concourse. Supporters are also encouraged to send messages through the team’s social media channels ahead of the game.
Colleen Briggs, President of the Blue Cross NC Foundation and Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Blue Cross NC, said, “Every child deserves to feel supported and mentally healthy. That’s why we’re helping coaches, educators, and community partners, including the Carolina Hurricanes, recognize when a young person may be struggling and know how to respond. Together, we are building a healthier, more connected future for children and youth across North Carolina.”
Blue Cross NC is working to bring Youth Mental Health First Aid training to all 100 counties in North Carolina. This program equips adults who interact with young people with skills to identify and respond to mental health challenges using a five-step action plan for both crisis and non-crisis situations. Last year, Blue Cross NC hosted a Youth Mental Health First Aid certification course for youth hockey coaches at Lenovo Center.
Before the game, several community groups will be present on the South Plaza offering information and resources related to mental health support. These include National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI NC), 22 Saves Hockey, 500 Fist Bumps, Dogs with a Purpose, Foundation of Hope, Grayson Murray Foundation, Lucy Daniels Center, Movember and The Hidden Opponent.
