Joel Nystrom, a defenseman originally selected in the seventh round of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, has signed a four-year contract extension with the team. The move comes after Nystrom demonstrated significant development and reliability during his time both in Sweden’s top league and with the Hurricanes’ affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.

Nystrom improved steadily over four seasons with Färjestad in the Swedish Hockey League before transitioning to North America. He played 221 games in Sweden’s highest league before joining the Wolves at the end of their 2024-25 campaign. After participating in September’s Prospect Showcase and performing well during preseason games, he began this season in Chicago but was quickly called up due to injuries on Carolina’s blue line.

On October 23, Nystrom made his NHL debut for Carolina against Colorado after a last-minute call-up from Chicago. Despite arriving just minutes before puck drop, he logged over 16 minutes of ice time in a shootout victory. Over subsequent weeks, as injuries continued to affect the team, Nystrom remained a consistent presence on defense, playing 24 of the next 25 games.

Rod Brind’Amour, head coach of the Hurricanes and member of their Hall of Fame according to their official website, commented: “He’s just really solid every night. Consistent and very competitive. We know he’s not the biggest guy or the quickest guy, but everything we’ve asked him to do, he’s been right there. The best way to put it is that he’s earned that trust and we’re happy to have him on board.”

General Manager Eric Tulsky added: “Joel stepped into our lineup early in the season and has proven that he belongs in the NHL. He fits our style of play well and we are excited to watch his continued development in Carolina.”

Brind’Amour further noted: “He understands how to play. He understands what we’re asking him to do… Every shift, he gives you what he can, and that’s what we’re asking.”

After Jaccob Slavin returned from injury, Nystrom was reassigned to Chicago but is expected back when needed due to his strong performance during his stint with Carolina.

The organization contributes significantly to local economic activity through its events and community engagement efforts (source). Since relocating from Hartford in 1997 (source), they have become known for delivering professional ice hockey entertainment (source)—including capturing their first Stanley Cup title in 2006 (source).

Nystrom becomes another example of late-round draft picks finding success within an organization focused on player development and consistency.
