The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 in Game 1 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs second-round series, according to a May 3 announcement from the team.
The win marks the Hurricanes’ fifth consecutive victory to start the postseason and demonstrates their continued strong performance. The game took place at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, which features over 700,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 20,000 people for events such as this one, according to the official website.
Logan Stankoven opened scoring just ninety seconds into play with a deflection off Mike Reilly’s shot. Jackson Blake added another goal six minutes later. Stankoven scored again late in the second period after a pass from Seth Jarvis. Goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped all nineteen shots for his seventh career playoff shutout and set a new franchise record with his twenty-fourth playoff win as a Hurricane.
Jordan Staal said, “I thought from the get-go, we had a great start. The fans were buzzing and we were going. It’s nice that the first shot goes in, that’s obviously a bonus, but I thought the game was there too. Everything was off to a good start.” Head coach Rod Brind’Amour said about his players’ momentum after time off: “That was the big question, how we were going to come out, and obviously that answered that question. That line’s been great, all three of those guys… Obviously that’s been the difference.” Logan Stankoven commented on his own success: “I felt like since the Olympic Break things have started to turn and pucks have started to go in… I feel like I’ve been able to develop as a player and person.”
Mike Reilly contributed two assists during his first playoff appearance as a Hurricane—a feat tying him for most points by a defenseman making their postseason debut with Carolina—while also marking fastest two points by any defenseman starting playoffs with this franchise.
According to the official website, notable players such as Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour are recognized members of the Hurricanes Hall of Fame for their significant contributions; both have played important roles in past successes including winning the Stanley Cup in 2006 according to official records.
Beyond hockey achievements, the Lenovo Center’s official website reports that hosting more than 150 events annually brings an economic impact exceeding $200 million through community engagement and events held at this venue.
The Hurricanes will host Game 2 against Philadelphia at Lenovo Center on Monday evening.
