The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 on March 15, with several players’ mothers in attendance for the team’s annual Moms’ Trip.

The victory was significant for the Hurricanes as it followed a recent home loss and came during a special event that celebrates family involvement in the team. The game also marked head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s 600th game behind the bench, where he set a National Hockey League record for most wins through a coach’s first 600 games.

Andrei Svechnikov opened scoring in the first minute, assisted by Sebastian Aho. Later in the period, Svechnikov returned the favor, setting up Aho for his 24th goal of the season. Despite Tampa Bay tying the score late in the second period, Jordan Martinook scored what would be the game-winning goal with just over ten minutes remaining. Logan Stankoven added an empty-net goal to secure the win. Goaltender Frederik Andersen made 18 saves to earn his third consecutive victory.

Brind’Amour said after the game, “Obviously, it started out great, getting the goal to start the game. That gets you feeling good about things. We had a couple of mistakes that they ended up capitalizing on, but really, throughout the game, I thought we were solid. [Freddie] had a couple of big saves, [we] had a couple of special plays from a few guys. Overall, it was a great effort.” Martinook commented on his team’s resilience: “They had their push there in the second [period], but we just stuck with our game the whole way through. I think we had a really good plan to go up against what they do really well. All four lines were going and doing their thing. When we’re doing that, we’re a hard team to beat. Everybody was chipping in tonight, and it was a great game.” Andersen reflected on having family present: “It’s great. It’s hard to get all the way over here, and it’s really special to have all of our moms here. For me, personally, to have my mom be a part of it, it’s awesome. We’ve enjoyed ourselves, and I’m sure they have too.” Martinook also shared about scoring in front of his sister: “I just like having my people around… She spent hours and hours in the rink with me… I just appreciate her, and I love her so much. It’s a special bond.” Brind’Amour also spoke about Seth Jarvis’ first career fight: “He’s trying to stand up for his buddy… That’s not really his game… but I love that he’s willing to do it… Good on him.”

The Hurricanes are scheduled for practice before traveling to Columbus for their next matchup against division rivals.

According to the official website, Carolina has recognized players such as Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour in its Hall of Fame for their contributions and achieved its only Stanley Cup championship in 2006.
