The Carolina Hurricanes will face the Colorado Avalanche at Lenovo Center in Raleigh on Saturday, January 3. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. ET puck drop and will be broadcast on FanDuel Sports Network South and available via radio on 99.9 The Fan and the Hurricanes App.

The Hurricanes enter the contest with a record of 25-12-3, leading the Metropolitan Division with 51 points. Their last outing resulted in a 7-5 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, where Sebastian Aho recorded two goals and three assists, marking his second career five-point game. Goaltender Brandon Bussi took his first home loss at Lenovo Center, bringing his record to 13-2-1 over his initial NHL appearances.

The Avalanche arrive as the top team in the league with a 30-2-7 record and 67 points, having recently defeated the St. Louis Blues 6-1. Colorado has lost only twice in regulation through their first 39 games this season and maintains a ten-point lead over their closest competitor in the standings. Nathan MacKinnon leads their offense with 70 points, tied for first in league scoring.

Both teams will wear retro uniforms for this matchup—Carolina will don their white Whalers set while Colorado will appear in Nordiques-themed attire. This marks the second of three occasions this season that Carolina will wear Whalers uniforms, with another planned later this month.

Former Hurricanes players Brent Burns, Jack Drury, and Martin Necas return to Raleigh as members of the Avalanche. Burns averages over nineteen minutes per game on defense and has tallied twenty points this season; Drury leads Colorado centers in faceoff win percentage; Necas is currently seventh among all NHL skaters with fifty-one points.

Goaltending decisions remain open for Carolina as they begin back-to-back games this weekend. Bussi allowed six goals on twenty-one shots against Montreal, while Frederik Andersen has not won in his last eight starts.

On the injury front, defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere is considered day-to-day after missing three games due to a lower-body injury but practiced recently. Goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov is scheduled for hip surgery according to head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s announcement from December 29. Defenseman Jaccob Slavin and forward Seth Jarvis are both recovering from upper-body injuries sustained in December; Jarvis returned to practice wearing a no-contact jersey on January 1. Defenseman Charles Alexis Legault remains out following hand surgery performed November 10.
