The Carolina Hurricanes concluded their regular season with a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Apr. 15, securing momentum as they head into the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
This result marks an important transition for the team as they prepare for postseason play. The win also featured significant individual milestones and NHL debuts, highlighting both experience and emerging talent within the roster.
Nikolaj Ehlers scored in his second consecutive game, extending his point streak to four games and finishing his first year with career highs in assists (45) and points (71). Felix Unger Sorum made his NHL debut and recorded his first career point by assisting on Ehlers’ goal. Mark Jankowski added the decisive goal in the third period, marking his third goal in three games. Ronan Seeley also debuted, skating alongside Joel Nystrom, who notched an assist after being recalled earlier that day. Goaltender Brandon Bussi delivered a strong performance with 27 saves to secure his 31st win of the season.
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour said after the game, “It was kind of how these last few games have gone. We just kind of hung around, battled, and made some good individual efforts on key plays for goals… We just found a way to get it done.” Jankowski commented on both the victory and contributions from new players: “It was a good game. It was tight. Everyone who came up played great. It was awesome for (Ronan Seeley) and Felix (Unger Sorum) to get his first point. It was a great win. Now, it’s onto the playoffs.” Bussi added about playing with new faces: “We just compete really hard… A lot of guys have been working hard in Chicago this year; they deserve the opportunity, and they made the most of it.” Seeley described achieving an NHL debut as “what I’ve been dreaming about since I was a little kid… I’m so happy.” Brind’Amour praised Bussi’s performance: “He was great tonight… He was probably the difference maker.” As attention turns to playoff hockey, Brind’Amour said: “We’ve got to turn the page now… all of a sudden you’ve got to be ready right from the get-go and put your best foot forward,” while Jankowski emphasized that every detail is amplified during postseason play.
