Andrei Svechnikov and Shayne Gostisbehere each recorded three points as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 at Lenovo Center on Saturday. The game took place in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the Hurricanes play their home games at the Lenovo Center, a venue that can seat up to 20,000 people and hosts more than 150 events annually according to the official website.
Detroit opened the scoring in the first period, but Carolina responded early in the second. Jackson Blake tied the game with his 11th goal of the season after deflecting a shot from Gostisbehere. Eric Robinson then gave Carolina the lead by finishing a pass from Svechnikov.
Gostisbehere added another goal later in the period following a set faceoff play. In the third period, Detroit scored on a power play to cut Carolina’s lead to one. However, Svechnikov restored a two-goal advantage for Carolina after forcing a turnover and scoring past goaltender John Gibson.
The Hurricanes maintained their lead through penalty kills and sealed their win with an empty-net goal by Jordan Martinook, assisted by Gostisbehere and Svechnikov.
Goaltender Brandon Bussi returned to action for Carolina after his nine-game winning streak ended earlier in December. He stopped 18 of 20 shots and improved his record to 12-1-1 this season.
Eric Robinson extended his point streak to four games with his third consecutive goal. Svechnikov’s three-point night marked his fifth straight game with at least one point and was his second three-point performance of the season. His effort also tied him for seventh-most multi-point games in franchise history alongside Blaine Stoughton.
Gostisbehere registered his seventh multi-point game of the year against his former team, ranking third among Hurricanes players this season behind Sebastian Aho and Svechnikov. Martinook returned from injury to score his 100th career goal, most of which have come while playing for Carolina.
Bussi has now gone 11 straight starts without a regulation loss (10-0-1), which is second only to Antti Raanta’s streak for longest such run by a Hurricanes or Whalers goaltender in one season.
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour commented on the team’s performance: “That was a great game. We deserved to probably have way more. That was the frustrating part after the first period – to be down when I thought we played great. But I loved the way we played. Yeah, they had their little push there with the power play goal that got them going a little bit, and Bus made one nice save there just to kind of settle it down. The third period, we knew they were going to come a little bit, but I liked the way we kept playing.”
Jalen Chatfield discussed returning to winning form: “We wanted to get back at it. We were eager after a couple of days off and how the other games finished, so we were happy that we were able to close this one out.”
Shayne Gostisbehere addressed bouncing back after recent losses: “We had some emotional games before the break, obviously, that didn’t go our way either. So for us to respond against a really good team who’s playing well right now, it’s big for our group. Especially, we had a little bit of a lead, and we managed their push. Bus came up big for us.”
Andrei Svechnikov spoke about Gostisbehere’s impact: “He makes it easy. He’s always making those plays, skating with the puck and creating for the forwards. It’s huge. You want to play with him.”
Brind’Amour further praised Gostisbehere: “He was lights out. He should’ve had another (goal). He was all over it, and he played really well defensively. He was holding down the fort. Again, with what we’re missing, we’re looking at the guys that have to do a little more and play in situations they don’t normally play. He’s stepped up.”
The Hurricanes will practice Sunday before facing off against the New York Rangers at home on Monday as part of their next set of games.
