The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-5 in an overtime game at Lenovo Center on March 19. The match featured multiple lead changes and a dramatic finish, with Sean Walker scoring the winning goal for Carolina.

The contest was significant as it brought together two of the top teams in the Metropolitan Division and showcased high-scoring action. The result adds to Carolina’s strong season performance and highlights their resilience during challenging moments.

Jordan Martinook opened the scoring for Carolina with a shorthanded breakaway goal in the first period. After Sidney Crosby tied it for Pittsburgh, Jackson Blake restored the Hurricanes’ lead before a third period that saw both teams combine for seven goals. Taylor Hall, Bryan Rust, Logan Stankoven, and K’Andre Miller all contributed to a back-and-forth final frame that ended regulation tied at five goals each. In overtime, Walker scored his first career overtime goal to secure the win.

“I thought we were great pretty much all night. It was a weird game. Going to the third, it was 2-1, and it ends up 6-5. You would have never thought that the way that game was going. We created a ton of good opportunities tonight, [but] we just didn’t cash in. Then, a couple of weird bounces, fanned-on shots, we were giving them breakaways, and we found ourselves behind. Give the guys credit. They just kept playing. It didn’t really affect us one bit, which it easily could have,” Rod Brind’Amour said after the game.

Sebastian Aho assisted on Walker’s winner for his 700th career point, joining Eric Staal and Ron Francis as Hurricanes players to reach this milestone. According to the official website, Staal is among those recognized by the team’s Hall of Fame for significant contributions.

Jackson Blake recorded his second three-point performance of the year and reached 20 goals for the first time in his career; Carolina now has five players with at least 20 goals this season—more than any other NHL club.

The Lenovo Center hosted this matchup between division rivals; according to its official website, it accommodates up to 20,000 people and hosts more than 150 events annually while contributing over $200 million each year to Raleigh’s local economy through events and community engagement.

Reflecting on his overtime goal, Walker said: “Honestly, I’m just trying to create a little space for him. I want him and Jarv to have the puck. I tried to set a little pick, and honestly just kind of blacked out. I opened up, he made a nice pass, and I figured it was a good time to try and shoot. I’m happy it went in.”
