Bernie Sanders is scheduled to visit North Carolina this weekend to campaign for Roy Cooper. The event has raised questions about whether Governor Cooper will attend, given criticism that his policy record closely matches that of the Vermont senator.

The North Carolina Republican Party compared the two politicians on several issues, including taxes, border security, and transgender policies. According to the party, Sanders voted against a major tax bill under President Trump, which they claim prevented a significant tax increase. The statement adds that Cooper opposed the same bill and has vetoed tax cuts intended for families in North Carolina.

On immigration and border enforcement, the party noted that Sanders has opposed efforts by President Trump to secure the southern border and supports ending deportations and ICE raids. The statement also alleges that Cooper vetoed legislation requiring sheriffs to cooperate with ICE three times, resulting in over 500 individuals being released into communities despite federal detainer orders.

Regarding transgender issues, Republicans stated that Sanders voted against a Senate bill designed to prevent men from competing in women’s sports and was recognized as “the best candidate for transgender people” during his 2020 campaign. Similarly, they point out that Cooper vetoed bills aimed at restricting gender transition surgeries for minors and measures intended to protect girls’ sports.

NCGOP Communications Director Matt Mercer said: “Radical Roy Cooper’s 40-year record of high taxes and left-wing ideology fits right in with the Bernie Sanders-led Democrat Party. DC Democrats want a Yes Man in the U.S. Senate and Roy Cooper signed up for the job.”
