Attorney General Jeff Jackson has issued a warning to North Carolinians regarding a new wave of text message scams. These fraudulent messages, which mimic previous toll text scams, are targeting residents across several states.
“Unfortunately, scammers took note of the toll text scams that were everywhere a couple months ago and are now using the same playbook for these traffic text scams,” Jackson stated. He emphasized the importance of vigilance and urged residents to inform their loved ones about these deceptive texts. “Please keep an eye out and warn your loved ones that these texts are scams. Government agencies will never text you to threaten legal action.”
The scam messages caution recipients that failure to click on a provided link for payment could result in consequences such as suspended driving privileges or vehicle registration, or even prosecution. However, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) assures the public that it will never request payments via text.
For those uncertain about the legitimacy of communications purportedly from the NCDMV, individuals are advised to contact the agency directly at (919) 715-7000.
