Today, Attorney General Jeff Jackson shared updates regarding the investigation into PowerSchool’s 2024 data breach. The U.S. Department of Justice has charged Matthew Lane, a 19-year-old college student from Massachusetts, with hacking into PowerSchool’s system. This breach potentially exposed the private information of millions of North Carolina teachers, students, and parents. Lane has agreed to a plea deal with federal authorities.

Attorney General Jackson expressed his satisfaction with the progress in the case: “This hacker compromised the personal data of millions of people in our state and I’m glad to see he is being brought to justice,” he stated. He also extended his gratitude to the prosecutors at the U.S. Department of Justice for their efforts in apprehending Lane. Jackson assured that his office would continue investigating PowerSchool’s involvement in the incident.

Matthew Lane is facing charges including cyber extortion conspiracy, cyber extortion, unauthorized access to protected computers, and aggravated identity theft.

Individuals affected by this breach have until July 31, 2025, to sign up for free identity protection and credit monitoring services. More information on setting up a free security freeze is also available.
