Attorney General Jeff Jackson has issued a warning to North Carolina residents about the risk of charity scams during Giving Tuesday and the holiday season.

“Helping each other out is what the holiday season is all about,” said Attorney General Jeff Jackson. “But don’t let these bad actors abuse your kindness. Know what a charity scam looks like, and file a report with my office if you come across one.”

The Attorney General’s office advises those wishing to donate to take steps to ensure their contributions reach legitimate organizations. Additional resources on avoiding charity scams are available through the Attorney General’s website. The office also encourages donations to local food banks, which continue to face high demand due to increased costs and ongoing recovery from recent changes in SNAP benefits.

Older adults are often targeted by scammers, according to the Attorney General’s office. Anyone who has experienced or witnessed a scam is urged to file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Division online at http://www.ncdoj.gov/complaint or by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
