Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced on Apr. 21 his support for Governor Josh Stein’s proposed budget priorities, focusing on public safety, law enforcement support, and enhanced efforts to combat Medicaid fraud in North Carolina.

The announcement highlights the importance of investing in law enforcement personnel and strengthening the state’s ability to address crime and protect consumers. The North Carolina State Executive Attorney General aims to prevent crime, assist law enforcement, protect consumers, and defend residents’ rights, according to the official website.

Jackson said that supporting law enforcement is central to the Department of Justice’s mission. “Bonuses and pay raises help us recruit and keep the people we need in these jobs. When officers put themselves at risk to keep our families safe, we should be doing more for them, not less.” He also noted that additional funding for the Medicaid Investigations Division would improve efforts against fraudulent activities: “We already lead the country in finding Medicaid fraud and prosecuting the people behind it. A new data mining position will help us sort through huge volumes of billing data to catch phantom billing and other schemes – protecting patients and tax dollars at the same time.”

The office provides services across all of North Carolina under Jackson’s leadership as attorney general according to information from its official website. The agency exercises authority by representing state agencies in court proceedings, prosecuting criminal appeals, handling legal matters on behalf of North Carolina government entities, offering legal representation as well as criminal prosecution support alongside consumer protection initiatives.

Jackson also expressed support for salary increases among state employees including staff at the Department of Justice: “These are people who could make more money in the private sector but choose to spend their careers protecting North Carolinians.” He called upon lawmakers: “I’m asking the General Assembly to take these recommendations up in the short session and move them forward.”

As reported by its official site, these measures reflect ongoing commitments by Jackson’s office toward enhancing public safety infrastructure while maintaining robust oversight over legal matters affecting residents statewide.
