RALEIGH, N.C. – Alexander Nikishin made his debut for the Carolina Hurricanes after being drafted 1,681 days ago in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft. The much-anticipated event took place at Capital One Arena, marking a significant moment for both Nikishin and the team.
Nikishin’s journey to this point has been noteworthy. Twice recognized as the best defenseman in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), he spent six years honing his skills in Russia before joining the Hurricanes. His debut came as he filled in for injured player Jalen Chatfield.
Rod Brind’Amour, head coach of the Hurricanes, acknowledged the challenging circumstances of Nikishin’s first game, stating, “I don’t know if there is a tougher spot to throw a kid in, especially when there’s such a language barrier.” Despite these challenges, Brind’Amour noted that Nikishin “did alright” and showed potential for a bright future with the team.
During his time on ice, Nikishin demonstrated his physical prowess and shooting ability. His performance included clocking a shot at 92 miles per hour and effectively using his size against opponents like Andrew Mangiapane.
Fellow defenseman Sean Walker praised Nikishin’s performance despite language barriers: “He’s a big body, skates well, shoots the puck well.” Andrei Svechnikov also expressed pride in Nikishin’s ability to adapt quickly to playing in an NHL playoff game.
Nikishin’s debut was highlighted by a defensive play against Alexander Ovechkin, fulfilling what he described as a dream scenario. The game marked what many hope will be just the beginning of a successful career with the Hurricanes.
