Jennifer Tredway adopted Roxy, a shelter dog previously known as Bailey, in November 2023 as a companion for her other dog, Drax. Although Roxy seemed like an ideal match on paper—being housebroken, good with other animals, and the right size and age—the initial introduction between the two dogs did not go smoothly. According to Tredway, “And then it all fell to pieces. We had Roxy meet Drax outside, both on leashes. Roxy wanted no part of him. She lunged, growled, snarled. We were surprised. She didn’t even want him in the same zip code.”

The Tredways sought advice from friends and professionals after realizing they had overlooked the “rules of three,” which suggest that a new dog needs three days to adjust, three weeks to learn routines, and three months to settle in fully. For several weeks, Roxy was kept separate from Drax while she recovered from her spay surgery and learned basic commands.

Adjusting to life on a farm presented additional challenges for Roxy since she had never encountered horses or chickens before. The family worked with a trainer who provided guidance on helping both dogs feel safe around each other. Gradually, through joint walks at comfortable distances and supervised play sessions in fenced areas, Roxy became more comfortable with Drax.

Eventually, the two dogs began napping near each other and playing together indoors under supervision. “And then it happened,” Tredway said. “They started napping near each other, playing in the house and sitting close for treats. Roxy decided Drax is her BFF and follows him everywhere… That’s when we knew she felt at home.” Despite ongoing challenges such as separation anxiety and an unknown past for Roxy, the family continues consistent training.

Roxy’s progress has been marked by achievements including earning her American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizenship certificate in April 2024 and excelling in Rally Obedience classes soon after. In spring 2025, she achieved her first qualifying run at the Novice level toward her first title. “She LOVES classes and training,” Tredway said. “It’s been a wonderful bonding experience. I’m so, so proud of her.”
