Attorney General Josh Stein has called on Congress to allocate maximum funding for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in the FY2025 budget. Stein emphasized the importance of providing legal assistance to low-income Americans, stating, “Every North Carolinian deserves access to fair treatment in our justice system.” The bipartisan appeal to Congress by 39 attorneys general highlights the critical need for legal services to protect under-resourced individuals in various aspects of their lives.

The LSC plays a crucial role in supporting individuals whose household incomes fall below the federal poverty guidelines and who are facing legal challenges. Stein pointed out that LSC-funded programs assist a wide range of communities and individuals, including veterans, survivors of domestic violence, and victims of natural disasters. The Attorney General stressed the significance of fully funding the LSC to ensure that people have access to necessary legal services.

In addition to Attorney General Stein, a coalition of attorneys general from various states and territories have joined the call for funding the LSC. The broad support for this initiative underscores the widespread recognition of the vital role legal services play in safeguarding the rights and well-being of vulnerable populations across the country.

The appeal to Congress by Attorney General Josh Stein and his counterparts reflects a unified effort to prioritize access to legal assistance for those who need it most. As discussions around the FY2025 budget unfold, the push for funding the LSC remains a top priority for advocates of civil justice.
